Avec le matériel clinique d'une petite fille autiste, l'auteur donne une illustration du passage d'une modalité adhésive à l'utilisation de l'identification projective dans la relation avec l'objet. Lorsque l'enfant découvre qu'elle peut être "tenue" à l'intérieur de l'espace psychique du thérapeute, elle découvre aussi qu'elle peut garder, à l'intérieur d'elle-même, des expériences émotionnelles et, progressivement, la signification de ces expériences.

Doorheen de gegevens die een klein autistisch meisje in haar behandeling bracht, kon de auteur aantonen hoe zij overging van een adhesieve wijze van omgaan met het object, naar het gebruik van de projective identificatie.
Als dit kind ontdekt dat zij "vastgehouden" kan worden binnen de psychische ruimte van de therapeut, doet zij meteen de ontdekking dat zij ook binnen haar zelf haar emotionele ervaringen kan vast houden.
Geleidelijk aan leert zij dan aan deze ervaringen een betekenis toekennen.
