In dit artikel probeert de auteur het begrip «symbolische functie» te omschrijven evenals haar ontstaan en haar specifiek aandeel in de organisatie van het denken.
Het accent wordt hierbij vooral gelegd op de fundamentele rol die het object speelt bij het tot stand komen van de symbolische functie. Verder wordt ook de verwerking van de scheiding benadrukt evenals het belang van de derde persoon by haar opbouw.
Tenslotte worden de klinische beelden, die de symbolisatiestoornissen kunnen aannemen, onderzocht evenals de wijze waarop ze psychotherapeutisch dienen aangepakt te worden.
