In this article the concept of contact is discussed from a psychoanalytic viewpoint: an affective phenomenon, linked to the stage in de psychoanalytic process, happening inside or outside the setting, a specific ego function. The work of the early Bion offers a more thorough understanding of contact in psychoanalysis and psychoanalytic psychotherapy. Finally some clinical vignettes about patients that present difficulties in establishing contact, are presented and examined from the work of postkleinian authors such as Steiner, Meltzer and Grinberg.
