Uncanny experiences of the analyst in the initial encounter with his patient.

In this article I’ll reflect on uncanny feelings and experiences, which might happen to the analyst during the first sessions shortly after the move to the couch. These uncanny moments are probably a result of intuiting an aspect of the psychodynamics or the history of the patient, which will be understood later in the course of the analytic process. Similar to the first dream of analysis, uncanny feelings and experiences felt by the analyst during the analytic session may announce unconscious themes which will appear later in the analysis.

I’ll illustrate this with clinical vignettes taken from analyses which were terminated many years ago.
