Relatively little importance is given to psychoanalytic understanding in the treatment of alcoholism. The aim of this paper is to review the work of the French psychoanalyst Michèle Monjauze and the implications of her ideas for the treatment of alcoholic patients. A clinical example from a Dutch novelist is given as an illustration. The conclusions of Monjauze are linked to the clinical experience of the author.
