Summary

How to listen to the screams of analysands whose psychic life is nar- rowed to its simplest “inexpression” because “in psychosomatic states, the body is reacting to a psychological threat as if it were physiological nature (1989, p.12)”. Confronted with a representational vacuum, fro- zen affects and the lack of associativity, the analyst is facing a dead space which acts as protective shield for these patients. With her no- tion of archaic hysteria, J. McDougall introduced us to the heart of their primitive drama which reveals protosymbolizations, archaic fantasies like the one of a body for two, a high-risk struggle to avoid psychic death. What place should be given to her thought among other psycho- somatic approaches?
