Psychic configurations and pictorial composition

I have defined elsewhere (Matot, 2019, 2020) a psychic configuration as a position of mental functioning consisting of the regular activation and interaction of a set of elements giving it a certain stability and allowing the symbolisation of a more or less broad, but always limited register, of experiments. In this perspective, the emergence of a psychic configuration can be considered by analogy with the genesis of a painting, and the theoretical writings of some great modern masters can inspire us in this regard. The drawings of a child in therapy put into perspective with paintings of Basquiat will illustrate this point. Our itinerary leads us to map a three-step process – disconstruction of the object to reach the sensation – shaping and colouring something reflecting the unspeakable complexity of this sensation – forming a formless background from which the configuration will emerge – which partly corresponds to certain psychoanalytic theorisations, Two of them will hold me back because they also point out the place where – from my point of view – they could bring us back to theoretical dead ends: the concept of originals and pictograms introduced by Piera Aulagnier; and the theorization by Anne Brun of a «transfer of sensorimotricity» starting from her reflection on the place of the pictorial medium in the treatment of serious symbolisation pathologies.
