Summary

This article tries to clarify the interactive factors in the family circle which contribute to the building of the individual's psychic structure or which modifies its functioning.

In a psychoanalysis, understanding these past or present mechanisms in the patient's environment makes possible a richer reconstruction of psychic history as well as a more comprehensive understanding of the phenomena of transmission across generations of split-off psychic elements.

In general clinical practice, particularly when it concerns children and adolescents, appreciation of factors of interaction in the real and present environment is indispensable for a choice of the most effective type of therapeutic intervention.
