Seduction and passion in the analytical space. A theoretical misunderstanding

A passional dimension can take a considerable place in a psychoana- lytical treatment. The author considers it as an expression of melancholic nuclei linked to traumatic areas of the psyche. The reflection pursued during and after a difficult treatment leads him to envisage two stages in the elaboration and transformation of this passional dimen-sion. In the first stage, it is a question of surviving it, that is to say, both of avoiding evading it – insofar as engaging in it with the patient is necessary to access the traumatic nuclei –, but obviously also of resis- ting the effects of the powerful splitting that the sexualisation of the passional movement establishes. In a second phase, when the passional dimension has faded, the analyst has to be even more present, to avoid a defensive withdrawal, in the face of the invasion of the traumatic nuclei, which often take the form of a melancholic collapse. Indeed, the massive, intolerable pain that accompanies the resolution of the passion requires that the analyst (re)finds a capacity to engage even more in the confrontation of a real regression to dependence, and to respond to it in the register of primary maternal concern.
