Summary

The article shows the fecundity of the analytic setting, studying the structuring possibilities which it offers and which appear particularly in the context of severe narcissistic problems. Indeed, the setting which can go along by itself, remaining silent as long as there is enough psychic fabric to activate it manifests itself more or less clamourously when symbiosis and separation are the problems in the foreground. The setting, by alternating presence and absence responds in a very special way to the problem at issue. This new sensitivity to the function of the setting allows us to experience differently even those situations more classically neurotic.
