L'auteur défend l'importance du concept de narcissisme primaire, concept auquel Freud resta fidèle toute sa vie. Il montre l'articulation essentielle entre narcissisme primaire et identité. Dans le prolongement des hypothèses de Lichtenstein, il souligne la richesse du concept d'identité primaire et propose de spécifier une identité originaire, primitive, préexistente à l'identification ; il en précise certaines expressions cliniques et la nécessité pour l'analyste d'y être attentif.

Hij toont de wezenlijke articulatie aan tussen primair narcisme en identiteit. Voortgaande op de hypothesen van Lichtenstein, benadrukt hij de rijkdom van het begrip "primaire identiteit".
Hij stelt voor een originele identiteit te onderkennen, oorspronkelijk en ouder dan de identificatie. Hij omschrijft ze duidelijker via klinisch materiaal. Het is voor de psychoanalyticus noodzakelijk daar attent op het zijn.
Summary
The author argues the importance of primary narcissism, a concept to which Freud was faithful aIl his life. He shows the essential articulation between primary narcissism and identity. In extension of the hypotheses of Lichtenstein, he underlines the richness of the concept of primary identity and proposes a specific original identity, primitive and existing before identification : he emphasises certain clinical expressions of this and the need for the analyst to be attentive to these.
