The Odious Perfume of Truth of the Real

The Real is not only what is too much or overwhelming, it is also that which is not perceived, which escapes; the Real today, whether we like or not, whether it is our construction or not, is the economic rationale.

Warding off the hard, smooth cutting edge of that ambient economism which disenchants our reality, as a falsification of the Real, art is a useful resort, when it is not of indispensable rescue. With art there is a confrontation with both the external and internal limits of reality.

When it doesn’t remain tangential to those limits it tips over into the absurd and into destructivity. Perhaps psychoanalysis today might subscribe solely to this disenchantment in face of the Real. To the subject who wishes to experience the vitality of truth and the truth of freedom, psychoanalysis proposes confronting and going beyond pain to avoid being “really frightened” of it.
