Summary

This text is an attempt to take part in the ongoing discussion at the Belgian Psychoanalytical Society on the complex links between psychoanalysis and research. It presents the reflections of the author on her personal evolution towards becoming a psychoanalyst through her clinical research based on psychoanalytical thought.

This reflection begins with a reminder of the links between clinical psychology and the psychoanalytical model, in order to define the specificity of clinical research. These thoughts are illustrated by the presentation of research undertaken by the author on the repetitive recourse of Greek women to abortion. The different steps in the construction of the research, from both a conceptual and a methodological point of view, are presented. Of particular interest is the use of the concept of the repetition compulsion in a framework different from that of psychoanalysis itself, as is the implication of the investigator, as both author and subject of the research.

The continuation of this research in clinical practice, both in a therapeutic setting and within the framework of Family Planning in Belgium, leads the author to reflections on the analyst's position with respect to the question of prevention and on the impact of cultural factors on psychic functioning, especially with regard to sexuality and reproduction.
