Summary

In the first part of the article the features of the Sphinx as they were discovered by historians and archeologists in the 20th century, are described. From these findings we can conclude that the image of the Sphinx is partly a cover-up. With this as starting point, we try to make a Kleinian and Post-Kleinian interpretation of the Sphinx, after a brief review of existing interpretations. We conclude that the Sphinx can be used as an image for the pre-oedipal mother-internal object. Some clinical implications are discussed.

In the second part of the article, we consider the riddle of the Sphinx, which can be compared with the riddle of the Unconscious, the Unknowable. Two different attitudes towards this riddle are discussed : a conquering and an experiencing one. This is reflected in the comparison of a Freudian and an Bionian attitude. It is also compared with the two-track model, which is often used in contemporary psychoanalytic theory. To make the Bionian, experiencing attitude more clear, some correlations with Japanese points of view are given. We also stress the concrete effect of this experiencing attitude on the transference-countertransference process.

In conclusion we make a possible link between the first and second part of the text, in indicating how a possible evolution of the internaI Sphinx-Object can be made possible by an experiencing attitude.
