Summary

The author tackles the question of the importance of latency and the latency period, taking Freud as his starting point diverging from him in certain ways.

After recalling the destiny of the oedipus complex in the renouncing of incestuous objects, he envisages the two fondamental aspects of the work of latency : the dialectic of desexualisation-resexualisation and the composite aspects of defensive and elaborative work.

Ceratin therapeutic considerations follow, among others the particular destiny of the psychoanalytical process in children who enter latency during treatment.
