Summary

The epistemology in the work of Jean Laplanche is characterized by two different traits. There is first the pre-eminent significance of Freud’s work and second the particular attention to the wrong tracks, the inconsistencies and contradictions within that work. In other words la-planche reads Freud’s work like a dream text where no minor detail should be neglected because the smallest difference can be of the greatest importance. This approach differs from a traditional epistemology in which only the criteria of objectivity (the validity of a statement is independent from its author) and logical consistency are valid. Instead of following this scientific model the author proposes a methodological approach for psychoanalysis which is appropriate to the unconscious and which founds in the “entstellung” (distorsion) its keyword.
