Summary

The adolescent process of defining identity necessitates discreet but robust family support of which an important aspect resides in the availability for the adolescent of a preconscious representation of the vitality of his parents that corresponds to the perceived reality, for them, of the possibility of sufficient satisfaction of their drives that is respectful of the differentiated functioning of their psychic entities. It is this support, which I call here transmission of existence, that is opposed to the sense of the absurdity of life, which is particularly vivid and sometimes extreme in adolescence. A quotation from one of the first texts by the poet René Daumal illustrates the dialectic between the sense of the absurd and the sense of existing, which is at the heart of the works of Sartre and Camus. A few biographical elements concerning these two authors make it possible to underline the similarity of family configurations little likely to transmit a sense of existing. Reference to the reality of the person as organiser of the therapeutic encounter with the adolescent, supported by the work of André Alsteens, makes it possible to propose some elements susceptible of facilitating the reinforcement or the restoration of the adolescent’s sense of existing.
