Identifying with one’s aggressor, plurality of the concept and traumatic dimension

Identifying with one’s aggressor was the subject of two very distinct postulates, a first one by Ferenczi in 1932 and another by Anna Freud in 1936. Ferenczi describes a pathological and seriously toxic form cor- responding to an attack on the subject’s identity after a major trauma. On the other hand, Anna Freud describes a defence process seeking to control anxiety in the face of external objects perceived as threa- tening. This process is transitory and turns out to bring about struc- ture. Whether the identification turns out to be alienating or structuring could therefore depend – in a first approximation – on the nature of the aggression, on the aggressor’s symbolic and affective place in the child’s life, and the degree of psychological maturity that the child has reached. Illustrations in various fields will shed light on these notions.
