Ferenczi, reflections and controversies on the theory of technique

Sandor Ferenczi never ceased to question the need to articulate practice and theory. As early as 1918, confronted with particularly difficult cases and therapeutic failures, he developed a theory of trauma that was followed by his new elaborations about the analytical technique, which questioned the classical Freudian technique. He maintained a fierce independence, showing an original and creative spirit, as well as a great authenticity. Guided by his countertransference, Ferenczi engaged in various experiments in three successive periods: the active technique (1918-1926), the period of technical elasticity (1926-1929) and the period of neo-catharsis and mutual analysis in connection with his new conceptions of trauma (1929-1933). His research has left im- portant traces that still guide our clinical and training practices today.
