Summary

The author reflects upon the participation of the work of mourning in the end of an analysis, when the loss of both analyst and analyst is imminent. A theoretic discussion introduces, by way of S. Freud and M. Klein, the inherent characteristics of mourning in general. The terminal phase is seen secondarily as a kind of work of anticipated detachment from the object. In continuation with the analytic process, the mourning to be done concerns the libidinal objects and the narcissistic ideals for the projection of which the analyst was the support ; but it concerns equally the real object of the analytic relationship and the transitional object created by the analyst and the analysand.
