Summary

The play-acting in psychodrama allows the treatment of thought disorders in patients resistant to a classical approach. This seems due to the fact that an extra-psychic area of fantasy is established in which the internal objects can be externalised. The different parts of the personality, adult and infantile, can start a dialogue with one another.

On the other hand, the protagonist who takes the role of a certain object in the person's history is not that object and the play-acting offers substitute objects for deplacement. It can then take place without carrying along the libidinal charge.

Thus it can move out the symbolic equation in order to achieve symbolization and then finally transference.

The playing out of the symbolic equation may then become the productive «as if» of the analytic situation.
