Summary

On the basis of a detailed study of the literature, the author tries to sift out the different criteria used by analysts in considering the analyses of their patients terminated. He also examines the way in which the results achieved are evaluated.

He assigns great importance to the particular characteristics of the terminal phase of the analytic process and the way this is handled from the technical point of view. He raises the question of the affective repercussions of the end both for the therapist and the patient.

He concludes that the terminal phase of an analysis constitutes a period crucial for the happy termination of an analysis. The effective working through of the process of mourning is an assurance of good psychic functioning. The interaction therapist-patient plays a big part in this.
